Your Trusted Vancouver Notarization Office

One of the most common services Brosgall Legal | Notary Services does is notarizing documents. Notarizations serve to deter fraud, confirm the identity of a signatory to a document, and prove the authenticity of the signature. A notarized document indicates that a notary has taken all reasonable steps to verify a signer's identity before witnessing their execution of a document. This article will explain what a notarization is, and how we can help. If you have any questions, or want to book an appointment, please send us an email or call us at 604-685-ADAM [2326]. You may also visit our VancouverNotary.biz home page for further information.

Notarization of Signatures

Notarization is a usually a fairly simple procedure whereby you visit our downtown Vancouver notary office with your government issued photo ID and the unsigned document needing notarization. We check your ID, and observe as you sign the document. We then take the signed document, and attach it to our notarial certificate, and apply our signature, stamp, and notarial seal. Once completed, third parties can be assured that we have confirmed your identity, and that you signed the document in our physical presence. The wording on this type of notarial certificate reads:

I DO CERTIFY AND ATTEST that the document hereto annexed, ____________ was signed by ____________ in my presence.  I confirm that ____________ produced his/her British Columbia Driver's Licence No. ____________ evidencing his/her identity,  an act whereof being requested I have granted under my Notarial Form and Seal of Office to serve and avail as occasion shall or may require. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I have hereunto subscribed my name, and affixed my Notarial Seal of Office.

Notarized Copies

Another situation arises if you need to get a document 'notarized', even though you won't be signing it. As discussed above, a notarization is typically when a notary witnesses the signing of a document and confirms the identification of the person signing. Having said that, you might be asked to get a document notarized, even though you will not be signing it. In these cases, we prepare a notarized copy. A notarized copy is a reproduction (usually a photocopy or photograph) of an original document which is authenticated by a notary to be a true facsimile of the original. Once we make the photocopy and compare it to the original, we prepare and attach a notarial certificate to the copy, and apply our signature, stamp, and notarial seal to certify that the attached copy is a true copy of the original. The use of a notarial certificate is why this process gets called a 'notarized copy'. For notarized copies, we will also need to check your photo ID. When necessary, a certified translation of your documentation can also be added to the notarial certificate. The wording on a this type of notarial certificate reads:

I DO CERTIFY AND ATTEST that the document hereto annexed is a true photocopy of a document produced and shown to me and purporting to be a ____________, the said copy of the above noted document having been compared by me with the said original document, an act whereof being requested I have granted under my Notarial Form and Seal of Office to serve and avail as occasion shall or may require. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF I have hereunto subscribed my name, and affixed my Notarial Seal of Office.

Vancouver Notarization Procedure Summary

In summary, a notarization or notarized copy is the process of a notary confirming the authenticity of your signature or document for third party use. When you visit our downtown notary office to have your signature notarized, please bring the original, unsigned document with you. If you need a notarized copy, we will photocopy your original documentation while you wait. If you need colour photocopies, please make your own colour copies and bring them in with the original. If you need a copy of something that is framed, such as an old certificate or diploma, please take a photograph of the framed document, print it, and bring it in with the original framed document so we can do a comparison. This process is known as the 'comparison method', and is permitted. We will make as many notarized documents as you wish. Finally, always remember to bring your photo ID.
