- Yea and Nay
-
'Yes and No' - According to the Charter of the Athelstan, the people of Ripon (near Leeds, U.K.) were to be believed in all actions or suits upon their 'yea and nay', without the necessity of taking any oath.
The Charter of Athelstan reads: "...and I grant them their own court in all pleas,... or in other courts that may be made... and that they may be credited by affirming with Yea and denying with Nay both among themselves and throughout the habitable globe..."
This is one of the earliest examples of an affirmation.
