BC Services Card Update by a Vancouver Notary

Clients who need the services of a notary public in British Columbia need to provide at least one piece of non-expired, government-issued photo ID. When people come in to Brosgall Legal | Notary Services, they aren't always sure which ID is allowed. Not everyone has a driver's license, so this ID requirement can be a problem for some people. In these circumstances, the new BC Services Card is your answer.

This article explains the new ID cards being used in British Columbia as of February 15, 2013. If you have any questions, or want to book a notary appointment, please send us an email or call us at 604-685-ADAM [2326]. You may also visit our home page for further information.

UPDATE: ID in BC is Getting an Upgrade

Photo identification (ID) is very helpful in day-to-day activities. In addition to the ID requirements of visiting a notary, you may be asked to produce photo ID for many reasons:

  • Confirm your address.
  • Write a cheque or use a credit card.
  • Prove your age at liquor stores, clubs and bars (where customers must be 19 or older).
  • Prove your identity for flights in Canada.

The new BC Services Card will provide secure access to provincial government services. Starting February 15, 2013, new cards will be issued with the goal of eventually replacing all existing CareCards, Driver's Licences and BC ID. This is a very useful link that explains all the changes to various ID Cards that took place as of February 15, 2013.

Which BC Services Card is Right For You?

  • New Residents
Those who have recently arrived in B.C. must confirm their eligibility for MSP before they qualify for a BC Services Card.
  • Adults Who Drive
Most people can combine their driver's licence with the new BC Services Card.
  • Adults Who Don't Drive
Adults without a driver's licence can apply for a BC Services Card with a photo.
  • Children & Youths Under 19
Children and young people under the age of 19 will get a BC Services Card without a photo.
  • Older Adults (75+)
